Supporting Trans Clients Through Political Trauma and Systemic Oppression
June 13th, 1:00- 3:00pm EST, conducted online via Zoom
In a world where anti-trans rhetoric and policies are intensifying, transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) clients are navigating not just past trauma, but ongoing, lived political violence. As the field works towards implementing affirmative approaches to support TGNC clients, healers need to implement approaches that acknowledge the impacts of societal gender bianries on clients and healers (Singh, 2016). There is a need for liberation-focused approaches that address the continued traumatic stress that this group experiences. Even though there has been greater public awareness of TGNC identities, anti-TGNC prejudice and inadequate healthcare training continue to decrease access (Porter et al. 2016). Trans communities are experiencing greater threats to safety and increased internalized transphobia, nondisclosure, and hopelessness (Tebbe, E. A., Simone, M., Wilson, E., & Hunsicker, M. 2022).
This CEU training offers a liberatory and trauma-informed framework for working with TGNC clients impacted by systemic oppression. Drawing from Somatic Experiencing and feminist clinical practices, participants will explore how to show up as co-conspirators in their therapeutic work, not just allies.
Learning Objectives
Participants will understand the impacts of political trauma and systemic oppression on the lived experience of Transgender and Gender Non-conforming individuals
Participants will be able to identify how oppression is internalized in the clinical space
Participants will gain tools to help support trans clients through continuous traumatic stress
Cultivating Healers seeks to provide educational and engaging CEUs with liberatory information, pop-quizzes, and case studies to ensure your learning.
This training is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits for NBCC Counselors & NY LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs.
