Oh That’s a White Person Disease: Unpacking the Challenges of Autism in the Black Community
July 25th, 1:00-3:00pm EST, conducted online via Zoom
“Oh That’s a White Person Disease: Unpacking the Challenges of Autism in the Black Community” is a dynamic two-hour training that explores how systemic bias contributes to delayed autism diagnoses and lack of access to care in Black communities. Black children and teens are often first diagnosed with ADD, ODD, or conduct disorders—if they are evaluated at all—before autism is ever considered, leading to missed opportunities for appropriate intervention and support.
We will identify autistic symptoms across the lifespan and explore the impact of racism, stigma, and cultural misunderstandings. This session draws on key findings from recent studies, including Onovbiona et al. (2023) on diagnostic timing among Black autistic youth, Aylward et al. (2021) on racial and sociodemographic disparities in autism diagnosis, and Jones and Mandell (2021) on provider bias and cultural differences affecting autism identification.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to recognize how autism is frequently overlooked in Black children and teens, who are instead often first diagnosed with ADD, ODD, or conduct disorders, delaying access to appropriate interventions.
Participants will be able to describe how delayed or missed autism diagnoses contribute to educational trauma and deepen mistrust in both medical and school systems among Black families.
Participants will be able to identify key autistic traits in Black individuals from childhood through adulthood—particularly those that may be masked, misinterpreted, or minimized due to cultural biases or systemic racism.
Cultivating Healers seeks to provide educational and engaging CEUs with liberatory information, pop-quizzes, and case studies to ensure your learning.
This training is eligible for 2 Continuing Education Credits for NBCC Counselors & NY LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs.
